The best college essays are proofread as PDFs
You've read it forty times.
You know it's clean.
Then you export to PDF, and there it is in the second paragraph.
A "your" that should be "you're."
It's called the curse of knowledge.
Once you know what a sentence is supposed to say, you cannot unknow it.
Your draft is a transcript of a thought you already had, so when you proofread, you're just remembering what you intended to write.
Familiar feels smooth and your brain thinks smooth is correct.
Example:
How many animals of each kind did Moses take on the ark?
Most people say two.
It was Noah, not Moses.
Psychologists call this the Moses illusion.
So before you submit:
1. Export to PDF and read it there.
2. Read it on your phone. Line breaks land differently.
3. Read it out loud. Your mouth catches what your eye skips.
And do it the day before, not five minutes before.
My full writing process for getting into Ivy League schools is in the masterclass.
